Raise your hand if you’ve missed meeting in real life (or IRL, as the social media specialists say it). Me too. That’s why we decided to dip our toes into the world of in-person conferences after two years of virtual success, planning a two-day event to be held June 17–18, 2023, at Toronto Metropolitan University in downtown Toronto.
That’s also why decided to theme this conference “Editors In Real Life.”
Of course, we are also following local health and safety guidelines. Sessions will be recorded for online viewing afterwards, and we are exploring a virtual component. We are also limiting the capacity to 150 participants (registration opened this week, so sign up now!).
We are looking forward to a series of presentations in four streams:
- Business of editing — sessions that help members conduct and grow their businesses. Examples: where and how to find work, contracts, work-life balance, markets and expanding services.
- Editing, society and diversity — sessions about how editors can encourage storytelling that changes our world and how language can be used as a tool for inclusivity. Examples: addressing climate change, racism, social inequities and appropriation and promoting language that reduces marginalization.
- Foundations of editing — sessions on the basic and not-so-basic skills that editors need to do their work. Examples: key aspects of different kinds of editing, special considerations for editing in different fields and genres and what editors wish they knew when they first started editing.
- Tools and technology — sessions about how editors can use current and emerging technologies and tools. Examples: productivity tools, bookkeeping and editing programs, genre-specific tools and tips for creating healthy workspaces.
Events kick off Friday, June 16 with a welcome reception in the evening, and our renowned awards banquet takes place on Saturday, June 17. This conference will also include speed mentoring, our regular Conference Buddy program and outings to local restaurants for casual networking. We’ll also feature early-bird pricing with member discounts (and partner discounts for some of your other favourite editorial associations!). And we’ve secured two excellent keynote speakers on two engaging and very different topics.
All of this, of course, is happening with the help of a stellar volunteer team working hard to pull it all together. (Message co-chairs Suzanne Bowness and Maylon Gardner at conference_chair@editors.ca if you’d like to be part of the team!)
